Review: Modcloth – Earth Shattering Dress

10 Jun

If anyone knows Modcloth, they know that this online boutique has a large selection of dresses.

I’m not quite sure about the quality because like Fred Flare, they procure their products from other manufacturers.

Still, I wanted to take a chance  since I’m always on the lookout for dresses. Especially since it’s graduation and wedding season, I wanted to find a nice dress for those occasions and I decided to purchase the Earth-Shattering Dress in Small from Modcloth.

It looks like it would be a great sheath dress since it emphasizes the waist and it has an A-line skirt that floats away from the body.

The dress would be perfect in a more conservative environment and you won’t have to worry about any major wardrobe malfunctions, unless it’s really windy.

Plus it has subtle beading around the neckline as a cute detail.

When it arrived, I was excited to try it on. And once I did…

… I wasn’t blown away with the fit but the dress itself was well-made despite being 100% polyester.

As you can probably tell from the photos, the dress is pretty loose on me. It’s so loose that I can pull it over my head without unzipping the back zipper. It lacks shape and definition in the waist and the length is a tad long, but not so bad as to make me look matronly.

If the brand, Collective Concepts made this dress in XS, it would probably be a better fit.

But it’s not a lost cause.

Using a bit of fairy dust and creative ingenuity, I gained a waist and shortened the hem!

From the side, you can see what change is made…a simple nip at the waist creates a more flattering shape. But what exactly caused this change?

It’s a mitten clip / vest clip!

For now, it’s a temporary solution until either I make the alterations myself or I take it to the tailor. All it needs is a few darts to take in 2-3 inches in the top part of the dress so it’s more snug.

But until then, I can wear it around without looking like ridiculous. Most likely, I’ll be wearing this at my sister’s graduation. =)

Interesting review! I’m always wary of sites that procures their merchandise from a variety of vendors. Have you tried a waist belt where the gathering is? AN recommended mitten clips to me a while back to keep tucked blouses inside skirts…I need to get myself some on eBay!

A belted waist does give more structure to the dress, but I wanted to show the waist detail so I used a mitten clip. Plus, I need to find belts that actually fit my waist.

I was also thinking that a belt would do the trick! I must say the color looks so much more vibrant on you than it does in the stock photo!

It’s a lovely print on you! I’ve never heard of mitten clip before, what are they??

It’s a small item people use to clip mittens to their jackets so it doesn’t get lost. Usually, it’s for kids, but I think they’re more versatile than just preventing lost mittens.

That’s exactly why I’ve never bought something from Modcloth- they are expensive, but I’ve heard that the quality isn’t very great.

I agree with the other ladies, a belt may make the dress cinch ur waist. Are you keeping it?

    • Stylepint June 14, 2010 at 7:01 PM #

I’m keeping it. I just need to find a good belt to go with it.

Love the mitten clip idea! I have a couple dresses from Modcloth, and while some of them haven’t turned out to fit exactly how I expected, I haven’t had any quality issues.

Just found you on weardrobe – really like your style. 🙂
