The Winding Road

20 Sep

I always enjoy getting away from the city.

Even if it’s just a scenic drive through the Angeles National Forest, I love sightseeing. The worries of so many yesterdays melt away as I absorb the beauty of my surroundings.

Life is full of twists and turns and the path to achieving your dreams isn’t always straight. Sometimes, you have to take the longer way, a way that seems to veer away from your intended goal. But having a great set of friends makes things so much better.

As for the changing seasons, I’m starting to feel it. The sun goes down earlier, the wind chill is picking up, and people are pulling out sweaters, scarves, and boots.

LA seasons aren’t as dynamic as other places, but it doesn’t mean we can’t enjoy cold weather gear. I can’t wait to bust out the heavier coats and jackets as I fully intend to take advantage of the crisp autumn air.

Right now, I’m obsessed with biker boots.

I got a cheap pair from Forever 21 and I’ve been trying to wear them as much as possible. Some may say it hits at an awkward length and it can make you look shorter, but I don’t care. To me, it’s awesome.

Lounging Around

9 Sep

This week seems to fly by faster, but that’s probably due to the holiday.

Whenever I go home, it’s like I get transplanted to place where time moves slower. Things feel simpler and there are less worries. Perhaps it’s the fresher air, the diminished traffic, or the Bay Area fog that relaxes me. I always thought of myself as a city girl…I like the urban landscape and the fast pace of it all. But when I’m home, I’m just a suburbanite that enjoys the quiet stillness of the night.

I lounge. I don’t like getting dressed up to go out because the best part is the getting ready part. The clubs, the bars, and the most of the nightlife scene is just too glitzy for me. Instead, I’d rather watch old movies with a couple of friends or have kickbacks that don’t require a dress code.

Since most of my friends are guys, I get sucked into whatever they do…except I don’t play video games very well.

Just Stay Calm

22 Jun

Weekends are usually pretty hectic for me, but it’s nice to relax and catch a movie with my friends.

Oddly enough, I tend to go for the action/horror flicks when it comes to going to the theaters, but everything else, I wait for the DVDs.

I guess it comes with the territory…I’m just one of the guys.

The Wrap Shirt

19 Jun

I have this wrap shirt, but I don’t wear it that often because I’m not sure how to style it.

It has that military detailing which makes it challenging to layer since it has so much going on. Two details on a shirt is more than enough for a petite…three is pushing it. Needless to say, if I was taller, all these details wouldn’t make this shirt look so busy.

Anyways, I have two basic outfits that go with this top, but I need some fresh ideas.

The first outfit is pretty boring I must say. I might add a small pendant necklace, but other than that…maybe some colorful pumps? I tried a chunky necklace or a longer chain one, but it doesn’t go.

How can it look more interesting?

What about the second outfit?

Alice in Wonderland

9 Mar

I’m still waiting to see Alice in Wonderland. It definitely has the old Tim Burton charm to it, but I’m not sure if it’s going to be amazing or just another film. As much as I love his movies, they’re getting the point where it’s the same old tricks which lead to lackluster productions like Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and The Corpse Bride.

But who am I to tell Tim Burton to be more creative?

For myself, I need to be more creative with my outfits. I’m still sticking to neutrals lately (this time it’s navy)…can’t seem to get out of that rut.

A Midnight Stroll

5 Mar

Some days, I just want to be outside and take a random walk through the streets of LA. I dragged some of my friends with me for a nighttime photo session down Abbott Kinney Blvd. They didn’t want me to post up their photos, so we’ll leave them out.

As we were walking around, we noticed that the atmosphere are night is much more calmer than it is in the day. You notice the oddities and disparities of the boutiques, cafes, and other stores. They’re all mish-mashed together in random order as if some time traveled to arrive at this street and others were transported from another part of the US.

New Year’s Resolution Part II

21 Feb

So, continuing on from the previous post, here’s the rest of the update on my New Year’s Resolution. (NYR)

My food budget is reining in my eating out expenses and helping me stay healthy. My stomach is weak in the morning, so multi-grain oatmeal is the only thing I can have for breakfast. I’ve been baking a lot more and making things like bread, pound cake, cupcakes, etc. I can’t eat them all at once, so I send them off to my friends.

Instead of eating at chain restaurants, I want to support the local neighborhood and find awesome neighborhood gems…so I’ll keep fast food to a minimum. So far, I’ve found some great places: Le Saint Amour, Ford’s Filling Station, and Cafe Brasil. When I eat at an independent restaurant, it feels special, especially if the chef physically works there!

Overall, I’m doing well on all fronts except shopping. It feels like I’m cutting expenses in all areas of my life in order TO clothes shop, which is not what I had in mind. So, I’ve re-vamped my goal to make it more realistic in the next couple of months. For my closet, I am limited to 30 pairs of shoes with a max budget of $100 per pair. Also, I can purchase clothing that fills the “holes” in my wardrobe such as slim-fitting trousers. As for accessories, I need a more substantial collection that does not consist mostly of Forever 21 wares. The rest of my clothing will adhere to the “one in, one out” rule.

Here’s a quick look at some recent nautical purchases:

Details: Madewell Navy Breton Tee XS, Martin + Osa adjustable belt S/M, Forever 21 fish necklace

All this budgeting, waste-reducing, healthy-lifestyle maintaining effort is not for nothing. I want to be more conscious of my purchases, where it is clothing or whether is it food. We’re so accustomed to fast-food and fast-fashion that I think we all need to take a step back. Sometimes, we’re so wrapped up in ourselves that we seldom take notice of how quickly the world is changing.

At the airport, I noticed that out of 50 passengers, half were hooked up – on the computer, listening to their ipod, or fiddling with their smartphones. Only two groups, less than 10 people in total, were having a physical conversation/social interaction.

Has technology made us socially isolated and awkward?
