Pretty Little Preppy

23 Sep

I’m trying to go without belts, but it’s so difficult!

Maybe I’ll just wear more non-belted outfits but today…belted.

One of my guilty pleasures when it comes to TV shows is Pretty Little Liars. The storyline reminds me of Desperate Housewives but younger. Plus, Aria and Spencer are great style inspirations…a little boho and a little preppy…right up my alley.

So I pulled out this button-down shirt that I never wear and tried to make it look like something I’d actually wear.

I’ve always had trouble with button-down shirts. In petite sizes, the length is usually too short to be tucked into pants. But in regular sizes, it’s too loose to be fitted. Even when I had a shirt tailored to fit me, I couldn’t think of how to wear it.

After a couple of horrible combinations, I pulled out this little number.

What do you think?

What are you favorite ways to style a button-down shirt?

The Wonders of Lanvin

21 Sep

One of my favorite Pre-Fall 2010 collections is Lanvin.

The clothes, the styling, the photography…it looks so luxurious and effortless. It captures most of the fall trends and expresses them in such great ways.

Though I do look to designers for inspiration, I don’t translate their looks literally because it’s quite difficult to pull these off in real life. But taking a few cues and adding them to my own style gives a nod to the greats without ripping them off.

It might be a silhouette, a color palette, or a mix of accessories that grabs my attention. Then, I take these ideas back to my closet to see what outfits I can create.

Here are a couple of my faves and I hope it’ll inspire you too!

The Winding Road

20 Sep

I always enjoy getting away from the city.

Even if it’s just a scenic drive through the Angeles National Forest, I love sightseeing. The worries of so many yesterdays melt away as I absorb the beauty of my surroundings.

Life is full of twists and turns and the path to achieving your dreams isn’t always straight. Sometimes, you have to take the longer way, a way that seems to veer away from your intended goal. But having a great set of friends makes things so much better.

As for the changing seasons, I’m starting to feel it. The sun goes down earlier, the wind chill is picking up, and people are pulling out sweaters, scarves, and boots.

LA seasons aren’t as dynamic as other places, but it doesn’t mean we can’t enjoy cold weather gear. I can’t wait to bust out the heavier coats and jackets as I fully intend to take advantage of the crisp autumn air.

Right now, I’m obsessed with biker boots.

I got a cheap pair from Forever 21 and I’ve been trying to wear them as much as possible. Some may say it hits at an awkward length and it can make you look shorter, but I don’t care. To me, it’s awesome.

A Visit to Ann Taylor LOFT

19 Sep

Since I’m on a shopping ban, I feel like I’ve been doing more of these fitting room reviews to compensate.

Everyone’s been talking about LOFT lately and I’ve only recently started looking at their things. Since there was a promotion on pants, I asked the SA about the pant styles and cuts. She told me that there were primarily 2 cuts, the Julie and the Marisa. Online, there’s the Ann, but they haven’t been getting them in the store recently.

I took a pair of each style in 00P to compare the fit on my body.

The Marisa.

Modern Fit. Sits lower on waist. Wide-leg silhouette.

The top is in XXSP and though it fits decently, I don’t think it’s for me. It looks much better on Petite XXS.

I like the idea of the silhouette, but it’s totally unflattering. My hips are too wide for this style with unsightly bunching in the crotch area. There is also a fairly large waist gap by 2-3 inches.

Would I buy it? No. But it would work on someone with a thicker midsection and slimmer hips.

The Julie.

Curvy Fit. Sits slightly below the waist. Contoured to flatter the hip and thigh. Wide-leg silhouette.

The tee is in XXSP. It’s cute, but not really my style. It’s a bit too snug over my chest, so I would go with an XSP instead.

The pant fits perfectly with no waist gap and there’s more than enough room for my hips. The silhouette is more of a bootcut than a wide-leg look, but it’s not bad. From the back, I have a serious case of pancake butt…and that definitely killed it.

Would I buy it? Not really unless I take it to the tailors to fix the back part. Would fit someone with a more sizeable bottom half.

So I guess these LOFT pant styles are not for me.

How about you? What styles fit your body shape and how do you like LOFT pants?

Lettin’ Loose

17 Sep

I’m a belter.

When it comes to outfits, it usually involves a belt of some kind. It’s trendy and it’s what everyone is doing, right?

Well, my boyfriend gets tired of this look and he thinks it’s boring and stodgy. Loose blouses should be allowed to billow in the wind, he says. They’re meant to flow, not to be tied down by a belt.

I agree, but a belt makes the outfit look better. It separates the body segments and balances your proportions. Without a belt, you could look shapeless or worse…fat! Not that it’s a bad thing, but who wants to intentionally look bigger than they actually are?

So, I’ve been trying to go belt-less.

Call it a mini-challenge, but I do want to mix up the type of outfits I create since I tend to fall back on the belted look.

Outfit Details: Stella McCartney for GapKids cardigan – M, Martin + Osa tank – 0, Rock & Republic Kiedis jeans – 24, Ross flats

How about you?

Do you belt it up or keep it easy breezy?

Peplum Blazer Revisited

15 Sep

The Urban Outfitters peplum jacket has gotten a lot of press lately from the petite blogging community lately.

Check out their posts: Alterations Needed, ChloeConspiracy, Extra Petite, From Head To Toe , Petite Little Girl , PetiteXXS, Vicky’s Daily Fashion Blog.

Everyone styled the blazer to match their personalities and I enjoyed looking at all the different outfits.

Whenever I come across a clothing item, I try to think of three outfits before purchasing it to make it worth my money. Aside from the casual look, I wanted to glam it up for the office.

Taking some cues from the latest Fall’s trends, I created a look that’s fun but work-appropriate. Recalling the 50’s full skirt look, I pulled out this ochre colored skirt from J.Crew. The peplum blazer and skirt exaggerates the “smallness” of the waist creating a nice hourglass shape. In the photos, I love the side silhouette best!

This is my second outfit with this blazer.

Outfit Details: Urban Outfitters knit peplum jacket – XS, Topshop lace peplum tunic – 0P, J.Crew skirt – 00, Urban Outfitters belt, Express  braided headband, random amber necklace, Aldo pumps

Weekend Recap

13 Sep

Even though everyone is talking about Fall, I’m holding onto the last remaining days of summer.

A quick trip to see some pretty flowers makes it feel like summer. I love gardens and checking out different floral species. It’s so crazy how similar they are in DNA, but they exhibit such varying attributes that make them look so distinctive.

I wish I charged my camera before I went because it died and I had to use a camera phone instead. Still, the experience is worth more than the photos.

On Sunday, I went to one of the last family dinners at my grandparent’s house. They’re remodeling soon and they’re moving….downstairs. It’s good because then, they don’t have to take a flight of stairs everyday.

I always enjoy what they make…nine dishes for 12 people…that’s way more than enough food and variety for us all.

And another random addition to the weekend…I took a hip hop class with one of my friends.

It was fun learning a couple new dance moves but today, I was super sore. I guess it’s more intensive than I thought, but still enjoyable. A bit of cardio and some sassy moves kept me entertained for the two hour class. Hip hop isn’t in my blood…but it never hurts to try.

How was your weekend readers? Did you try something new or stick to the ol’ routine?
