Review: Banana Republic Dresses

10 Sep

I was looking for dresses the other day and I stumbled into Banana Republic.

Though Banana Republic isn’t really my style, I saw a lot of 00P dresses in stock at the store so I wanted to try them out and save the trouble of ordering them online.

I want to find more office dresses but there too many options at other stores given my size so I took my chances with BR.

In 00P, this dress has a lot of movement and it feels as comfortable as wearing a jersey tee. I love the neckline, but it’s a tad loose and shapeless. Plus, I’m not a fan of the smocking.

To make this dress better, a nice chunky belt can give it better definition and shape. If it was one size smaller, it would be more flattering and harder to put it back on the rack.

Would I buy it? Maybe as a casual walking dress.

This dress was already reviewed by PetiteXXS. It’s an interesting print but the dress is too loose and the v-neck is too revealing when I move around. It definitely needs a belt to make it look more put together.

Would I buy it? Not really, unless it was one size smaller.

This work sheath has a great neckline again and it minimizes my bust so it doesn’t look too revealing despite the v-neck, which is something I want. But the rest of the garment doesn’t fit at all. It’s too long and too loose.

If I could alter it, I’d take in the waist by 2+ inches, shorten the sleeves, shorten the hem to be above the knee, and make the waistband thinner. Cher from also reviewed this dress.

Would I buy it? Maybe, if it’s on sale and a trip to the tailors.

I thought this dress would make a good layering piece since it has a tank already attached to a tweed skirt. However, instead of a stretch tee, this top has no stretch and comes with a size zip. The top fits pretty well, but the skirt over-accentuates the hip area with an awkward shape that makes me look really bottom heavy.

Would I buy it? Not likely since the skirt looks so unfortunate.

Overall, the dresses at Banana Republic in 00P are too loose and ill-fitting on me. Either they size inflated or I lost weight (which I doubt) but the dresses don’t fit right from the bust down.

Compared to the average BR shopper, I guess I have smaller waist(by 2+ inches) and smaller hip girth(by .5 -1 inch). If they start making XXXS/000P dresses, I’d probably shop there, but as of now, I don’t think I need to go back this season.

How about you readers?

Where do find work-appropriate dresses that can do well for casual and more formal occasions?

Thanks for this review Jess. BR has been really disappointing lately. I also thought that last dress had hope, but that thought is nixed after seeing hte IRL photo. You’re right…none of these are really flattering on you and I have a similar body type as you.

Last year I used to love BR, and while prepping for my blog sale I saw why…none of the 00P dresses fit right, but since they offered 00P in stores I bought em up anyways. Nowadays I save up for dresses from the Theory outlet in sz 0…some fit quite tiny. *Although* I did just get a casual ruffle tee dress from the BR outlet in regular XS, but it needs a good shrinkage.

Hmmmm yeah those dresses don’t really fit you too well. They would need a lot of alterations!

I’m bigger than you and I have pretty good luck with the BR dresses.

I was stalking the same grey sheath dress online. It doesn’t look bad in the bust area, yay! Baaah, it does look a bit loose on the sides and it is too long.

I like the second dress & the last one.
It’s so hard finding work appropriate dresses especially at decent prices.
I’m on the same boat as you

Gosh you poor thing, you’re so itty bitty it must be frustrating shopping for clothes! At least there’s always an option to get them altered.. perhaps wait for a sale or coupon code on the dress?

Yeah… don’t know what happened to BR sizing. I used to be so excited about their 00P and XXSP… and now those are huge still. None of the dresses have a flattering fit on you (except for maybe the first casual one). And I can’t believe the print dress is still full-price! I thought about possibly getting it and getting the straps taken up if it goes on sale for cheap enough, but definitely not worth it at that price.

Have you tried BCBG? They have some great day-to-night dresses. And they always have really great end-of-season sales and outlets where you can pick up some really good deals.

BCBG falls kind of in the same category as BR for me, mostly too big and very rarely does it fit right unless it’s BCBG petites (which I don’t normally see). But I’ll look into that brand more since there are a few items that seem to run small.

I actually like the second dress on you a lot! I can’t ever pull off prints like that but on you it looks just right. I do think the neckline is too revealing and I am not sure how much work the tailor would have to put in to eliminate that problem but I think it looks great on you! The last two dresses you modeled also looked good on you, just a size too big. I used to shop BR (the sale rack can sometimes be tempting) but would then come home and decide that things don’t fit as well as they should and then those clothes would just be buried in my closet and never see the light of day. For work clothes, and I am not quite as small as you are, I tend to have a piece or two from every source that fits perfectly off the rack but for the most part I need to seek the service of my tailor when it comes to work clothes. I do like Theory things and I have this VS blazer that I wear to pieces.
